A good robe is one of those things you do not think about until you own one. Then it becomes the first thing you put on in the morning, the layer you grab when the doorbell goes and the thing you wrap yourself in on a cold evening. A bad one is too heavy, too short, too hot or so bulky it ends up on a hook and never gets worn.
This guide walks through what actually matters when you are choosing a women's robe: the fabric, the weight, the length and the small details that make the difference. If you already know what you want, you can browse our women's robes now.
1. Start with the fabric
The fabric decides how a robe feels, how warm it is and how it holds up in the wash. These are the main options you will come across.
Plush fleece
Thick, fluffy and very warm. Fleece feels cozy for the first few minutes, but it does not breathe well, so it can feel hot and clammy if you wear it for long or put it on straight after a shower. It also tends to flatten and pill over time.
Cotton terry
The classic spa robe. Terry is absorbent, which makes it great after a bath, but it is heavy, slow to dry and can feel stiff after a few washes.
Waffle knit
Lighter than terry and more breathable. Waffle robes are a good middle ground, although the texture is not for everyone and they offer less warmth on a cold morning.
Silk and satin
Beautiful and lightweight, but they offer very little warmth, can be slippery to wear and usually need delicate care.
Bamboo
This is what we use. Our robes are made from our signature fabric blend of 93% viscose from bamboo and 7% spandex. Bamboo is soft against the skin, breathable and moisture-wicking, so it keeps you comfortable whether you are cold first thing in the morning or warm after a shower. The touch of stretch means it moves with you rather than feeling stiff, and it is machine washable and dryer friendly.
2. Choose the right weight
Think about when you will wear your robe most.
- A heavy, plush robe suits a cold house and short bursts of wear, such as stepping out of a bath.
- A lightweight robe suits long wear: getting ready, working from home, lounging on the weekend. It is also the better choice if you run warm or live somewhere with well-heated winters.
Most people who buy a heavy robe end up wearing it less than they expected. A lighter, breathable robe is the one you keep on all morning, in every season.
3. Decide on length
- Short (above the knee): easy to move in and good for warmer weather, but less cozy in winter.
- Knee to mid-calf: the most versatile length. Long enough to feel covered and warm, short enough that you are not tripping on stairs.
- Ankle length: very warm and very elegant, but can get in the way when you are busy.
Your height makes a big difference here, so check the product photos. Every model photo on our site lists the model's height and the size she is wearing, so you can picture how a robe will fall on you.
4. Look for the details that matter
The small features are what separate a robe you love from one you tolerate. Here is what we think is worth looking for, and what we build into ours.
- Deep pockets. For your phone, tissues and the coffee pod you forgot to put away. Shallow pockets are a constant annoyance.
- A long belt. A belt that is too short will not tie securely and comes loose as you move. Ours are long enough to wrap and knot properly.
- A wide lapel or shawl collar. A wide lapel lets you adjust how the robe wraps around you, open and relaxed or crossed over and snug at the neck.
- Easy care. A robe gets worn constantly, so it needs to go in the washing machine without a second thought.
- A matching headband. Many of our robes come with a matching headband, which is handy for skincare and makeup and makes the robe a lovely gift.
5. Get the size right
Robes are more forgiving on size than pajamas because they wrap and tie, but fit still matters. Too small and it will gape at the front. Too big and the sleeves will hang over your hands. A few tips:
- Check the women's size guide before you order.
- If you are between sizes and like a roomy, cocooning feel, size up.
- If you want a robe that wraps neatly and does not add bulk, stay with your usual size.
6. Pick a colour or print you will wear every day
You will wear your robe more than almost anything else you own, so choose something you will be happy to see every morning. Solid colours like Dark Navy, Solid Black and Hunter Green are timeless. Prints such as our plaids, tartans, hearts and florals bring a bit more personality. If you love a holiday look, a plaid robe pairs perfectly with Christmas pajamas.
Why our robes are made in Canada
Our robes are made in Canada, the same as the rest of our sleepwear. That means we know exactly how they are made and can keep the quality consistent, from the fabric to the stitching on the pockets.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fabric for a women's robe?
It depends on how you will use it. For all-day comfort in every season, a breathable fabric like bamboo is hard to beat because it is soft, regulates temperature and does not feel heavy. For a spa-style robe to wear straight out of the bath, terry is more absorbent.
Is a bamboo robe warm enough for winter?
Yes. Bamboo regulates temperature, so it keeps you warm on a cold morning without overheating you in a heated home. Pair it with long sleeve pajamas for extra warmth.
Can I put a bamboo robe in the dryer?
Our robes are machine washable and dryer friendly. For the longest life, wash on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low.
Do your robes come in petite or plus sizes?
Our robes come in combined sizes that cover a wide range. Check the size guide and the sizes listed on each robe for the current options.
Is a robe a good gift?
A robe is one of the easiest pajama gifts to get right, because sizing is forgiving and everyone uses one. See our pajama gift guide for her for more ideas.
